LAHORE:

The Punjab Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has introduced a strengthened regulatory framework mandating green buffer zones, large-scale plantation, and strict controls on tree cutting as part of efforts to reduce industrial pollution and improve urban environmental conditions.

Under the new directives, all industrial clusters across the province will be required to establish and maintain designated green buffer belts. Officials said these zones will serve as natural barriers between industrial emissions and nearby residential areas, helping to reduce air pollution and improve overall environmental quality. Industrial units have also been directed to carry out mandatory plantation within and around their premises.

Compliance will be ensured through regular field inspections and environmental audits.

Authorities warned that failure to meet plantation targets or maintain buffer zones will result in action under environmental laws, including penalties and operational restrictions.

The framework also imposes stricter controls on tree cutting. Industries and commercial entities must now obtain prior approval from relevant authorities before removing any trees.
