Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States from September 23 to 25, Beijing confirmed on Monday, in the latest high-level effort to manage tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

“At the invitation of President of the United States of America Donald J Trump, President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States from September 23 to 25,” the Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement without elaborating.

The visit will be Xi’s first state visit to the US since September 2015, when he travelled to Washington at the invitation of then-president Barack Obama. Xi later met Trump during his first term in 2017 and visited the US in 2023 for talks with then-president Joe Biden on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

Xi has visited the United States five times since becoming China’s president in 2013.

The upcoming trip follows Trump’s state visit to China in May, with Beijing describing the exchange of visits by the two leaders within six months as having “historic significance”.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Xi and Trump would hold an “in-depth exchange of views” on major issues concerning bilateral ties, as well as peace and development. “Head of state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role in providing strategic guidance to China-US relations,” Guo said, adding that Beijing would work with Washington to strengthen dialogue and cooperation, manage differences and contribute to global peace, stability and prosperity.

Xi is expected to be received by Trump at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, according to US media reports. He is also expected to be accompanied by senior Chinese business executives, including representatives of electric vehicle maker BYD and smart manufacturing company Xiaomi.

The summit comes as the two countries seek to ease tensions over trade, technology and other strategic issues.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Sunday described an eight-hour meeting with Chinese officials on trade and artificial intelligence as “very successful”. The talks, held in New York, involved Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

Bessent said Washington had proposed a notification mechanism to address security incidents involving artificial intelligence. The two sides agreed to establish an “US-China AI dialogue” and meet again, he said. Greer said it was “imperative” for the two countries to work together.

The discussions could pave the way for agreements on trade and AI ahead of the leaders’ summit. Washington is also seeking arrangements to ensure the continued supply of rare-earth magnets and other critical minerals essential to US manufacturers.

The two sides are additionally considering an extension of their trade truce and possible guardrails for artificial intelligence development.

The economic relationship gives the summit significance beyond government-to-government diplomacy. According to the US-China Business Council’s 2025 report, US exports to China support more than 530,000 jobs across the country. Despite years of trade tensions and talk of “decoupling”, economic links between the two countries remain substantial. China-US trade exceeded $570 billion in 2025, while the two economies together account for more than 40% of global GDP.

A 2026 survey of 175 US companies by the US-China Business Council found that 95% considered their operations in China somewhat or very important to maintaining their global competitiveness. The companies cited China not only as a major market but also as a manufacturing and innovation base.

The economic relationship also extends to Chinese consumers, where American brands, restaurants, films and music have become increasingly familiar parts of everyday life.

The scale of interdependence means that changes in trade and technology policy can affect manufacturers, retailers, workers and consumers in both countries. Any disruption, therefore, can have consequences extending well beyond negotiating tables and official statements.

With competing interests and persistent disagreements on trade, technology and security, Xi’s visit is expected to test whether high-level diplomacy can keep communication open and manage differences between the two economic powers.
