Authorities in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, have imposed a complete ban on the sale of loose powdered milk, warning that those who violate the order could be arrested and have their shops sealed.
The decision was taken on the orders of the Chief Minister of Balochistan, following a meeting chaired by the deputy commissioner of Quetta. Officials discussed the sale of unpackaged powdered milk and its potential health risks.
The district administration said loose powdered milk was often sold without information such as an expiry date, ingredients and other details.
It warned that consuming unsafe milk could pose serious health risks, particularly to children.
Shopkeepers across Quetta have been instructed to immediately stop selling powdered milk in loose form, and cautioned of legal action in case of finding loose powdered milk at a shop or warehouse.
District administration said people found violating the ban could be arrested and the businesses involved could be sealed.
The ban also applies to medical stores, which have been ordered not to sell loose powdered milk.
The district administration said medical stores across Quetta would be subject to inspections. Joint teams comprising officials from the food authority, health department and district administration have been formed to carry out enforcement operations.
Officials assure that action against the sale of loose powdered milk would continue without discrimination.
