ISLAMABAD/LAHORE:
President Asif Ali Zardari has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of nuclear safety and security.
In a message on International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day observed on April 26, the president stressed that Pakistan supports international efforts that promote responsible conduct, strengthen safeguards and reduce the risk of incidents like Chernobyl disaster.
He noted that nuclear safety requires consistent discipline and strong oversight with a clear understanding of the risks involved.
Separately, Acting President and Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani said Pakistan remained a responsible nuclear state and exercised restraint after the Pahalgam incident despite Indian aggression, while safeguarding its right to self-defence.
Speaking as the chief guest at an event in Lahore, Gilani said this was a time for unity, and that such unity was also demonstrated when India attacked and Pakistan responded as a responsible nuclear state.
“India not only carried out an attack but also unilaterally revoked the Indus Waters Treaty, Pakistan exercised restraint while safeguarding its right to self-defence,” he said.
