India strengthened their position in the second Test against Sri Lanka, reaching 475-8 before rain intervened on the second day at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo.

India, who won the toss and elected to bat, had finished the opening day at 300-5. They continued to build steadily on Monday, with Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel extending their important seventh-wicket partnership.

Jurel remained unbeaten on 95 at the tea interval, just five runs short of his maiden Test century. He faced 155 balls and struck nine boundaries in a composed innings. Mohammed Siraj was unbeaten on nought from 17 deliveries when rain stopped play.

Pant, who had resumed his innings after retiring hurt on the first day, scored a valuable 63 from 89 balls, including six fours and two sixes. He had earlier retired at 207-3 on the opening day before returning to the crease on Monday.

The pair put together a crucial 100-run partnership for the seventh wicket, helping India recover from 307-6 and move beyond 400.

Jurel reached his half-century from 97 balls, while Pant completed his fifty from 81 deliveries. Their partnership frustrated Sri Lanka’s bowlers and allowed India to establish firm control of the innings.

Earlier, Devdutt Padikkal was the mainstay of India’s batting on the opening day. The left-hander scored an impressive 117 from 193 balls, hitting 12 fours. He shared a century partnership with Shubman Gill, who made 50 from 108 deliveries.

Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed 45, while Ravindra Jadeja made 43. KL Rahul was dismissed for 18.

Sri Lanka’s most successful bowler was Asitha Fernando, who took four wickets for 78 runs from 25.2 overs. Keshara Nuwantha claimed two wickets, while Lahiru Kumara and Prabath Jayasuriya took one each.

Sri Lanka had made several breakthroughs on the first day but could not prevent India from taking control. India lost their first wicket at 37 before reaching 100 for two. Padikkal and Gill then added 120 runs for the third wicket, putting India in a strong position.

At stumps on day one, India were 300-5 after 85 overs, with Jurel unbeaten on seven and Saransh Jain on four.

The second day began with Sri Lanka looking to finish India’s innings quickly, but Jurel and Pant had other plans. Their resistance helped India cross 350, 400 and then 450 before Sri Lanka finally dismissed Manav Suthar for 18.

With India 475-8 after 131.2 overs, rain interrupted play and forced the tea interval. Jurel was left stranded on 95, while Siraj remained at the other end.

India will now look to push towards 500 and beyond when play resumes, while Sri Lanka will hope to take the remaining two wickets quickly and begin their own first innings.
