India batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando have each been fined 25 percent of their match fee and handed one demerit point following a physical altercation during the second Test in Colombo, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Monday.

The players were sanctioned for breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which covers inappropriate physical contact during an international match.

The incident occurred in the 17th over of India’s innings on the opening day after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal. The India batsman walked towards the bowler and the pair exchanged words before Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal.

Jaiswal then leant in and their heads made contact.

Both players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft, meaning no formal hearing was required.

Neither player had committed an offence in the previous 24 months.

The sanctions came as India and Sri Lanka continued an intense contest in the second Test of the ICC World Test Championship series in Colombo.

Rain interrupted play during the second session on day two, with India on 475-8. Dhruv Jurel was unbeaten on 95, five runs short of his second Test century.
