Massive public support saves citizen-run library, with donations exceeding target and securing its future

In a remarkable turn of events, Karachi’s citizen-run library Kitab Ghar has been saved from imminent closure after an overwhelming wave of public support enabled it to meet—and significantly exceed—its fundraising target in record time.

Earlier this week, the library’s management issued a public appeal, stating that rising rent costs had made it difficult to continue operations at its current location. They estimated that around Rs500,000 was needed to cover relocation expenses and sustain the initiative.

Following the appeal, donations began pouring in from across Pakistan as well as from abroad. According to the management, the target was not only achieved but surpassed within just 53 minutes of active fundraising, with total contributions ultimately nearly tripling the initial goal.

Support was received through multiple local payment channels, along with international platforms such as Venmo and Zelle. Donations ranged widely, from Rs500 to as high as $1,350 (over Rs370,000), reflecting strong public engagement with the initiative.

In addition to the fundraising success, the library also reported a temporary reprieve regarding its current premises. Management said an unnamed supporter has stepped forward, with discussions underway that could allow Kitab Ghar to continue operating at its existing location for an additional 11 months.

This development provides the team with short-term stability and additional time to plan a sustainable long-term relocation without interrupting services.

In response to the support, Kitab Ghar announced plans to organise community events in the coming days to maintain momentum and engagement. Expressing gratitude on social media, the management said: “Thank you for saving Kitab Ghar. It is an honour to serve every one of you.”
