NEW YORK: Medical technology company Glaukos said on Wednesday that patients treated with its late-stage eye disease therapy Epioxa maintained improvements in vision and corneal shape three years after a single treatment for keratoconus.
The company said none of the patients who received a single Epioxa treatment required additional intervention during the three-year follow-up period.
Eyes treated with Epioxa recorded a 1.9-diopter improvement in maximum corneal curvature from baseline after three years, indicating sustained flattening and stabilisation of the cornea.
Glaukos said about 29% of treated eyes gained at least two lines on a standard vision chart, while 20% gained three or more lines compared with baseline.
The findings add to evidence supporting Epioxa as a less invasive treatment option for keratoconus, as the procedure does not require removal of the cornea’s outer protective layer before treatment.
The study involved 38 eyes from 35 patients, with 92% of treated eyes completing the three-year assessment.
According to Glaukos, there were no serious adverse events, treatment-related adverse events or treatment discontinuations associated with Epioxa during the follow-up period.
Keratoconus typically develops during adolescence or early adulthood and can progressively impair vision. In severe cases, the condition may eventually require a corneal transplant.
