Antigua and Barbuda Falcons claimed their maiden Caribbean Premier League title in just their third season after beating tournament debutants Jamaica Kingsmen by eight wickets in Sunday’s final in Bridgetown.

Sufyan Moqim took 4-14 to restrict the Kingsmen to 170-9 despite a sensational 114 from Maaz Sadaqat, before Amir Jangoo and Hasan Nawaz completed a comfortable chase with 20 balls to spare.

Sadaqat’s 58-ball assault featured nine sixes and eight fours, accounting for more than half of the Kingsmen’s total. Saim Ayub’s 29 was the only other significant contribution, with three of the top six dismissed for ducks.

The Kingsmen appeared set for a much bigger total after losing Kirk McKenzie for a four-ball duck in the opening over and Keacy Carty for nine in the fourth.

Sadaqat and Ayub then put on 80 for the third wicket, taking the Kingsmen from 30-2 to 110-2 as the scoring rate hovered around 10 an over.

But Moqim turned the innings on its head in the 12th over, removing Ayub and Rovman Powell in quick succession. The Kingsmen collapsed from 110-2 to 113-6 over three overs.

Sadaqat continued attacking until he fell off the penultimate ball, but the damage was done as the Kingsmen finished on 170-9.

The Falcons made light work of the target from the outset. Rahkeem Cornwall smashed two fours and two sixes in a 20-run opening over from Ayub before being bowled by the final delivery.

Evin Lewis and Jangoo then added 64 for the second wicket to put the chase firmly in control. Lewis departed for 38 with the Falcons already close to halfway to their target and more than 12 overs remaining.

Jangoo and Nawaz finished the job in style, combining for an unbeaten 89-run partnership featuring seven fours and six sixes.

Jangoo ended on 57 not out and Nawaz 47 not out, with the result beyond doubt with four overs remaining. Nawaz then sealed the title with two sixes in the 17th over.

Falcons allrounder Shadab Khan was named tournament MVP after scoring 132 runs and taking 11 wickets.
