KARACHI: A woman 23, from Tando Allahyar is battling for life at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) after she was diagnosed with rabies encephalitis six months after dog-bite.
Twenty-three years’ Hajiani, a resident of Tando Allahyar brought to JPMC emergency in a precarious condition.
The relatives said that the patient was bitten by a dog on her right ankle six months ago and she was also administered three doses of the anti-rabies vaccine after dog-bite.
The patient found with symptoms of hydrophobia and saliva falling from her mouth. The team of neurology doctors after checkup diagnosed with rabies encephalitis.
The patient has been admitted at the intensive-care unit.
Rabies caused by bites of rabid dogs and other animals from which there is no chance of survival if the affected person was not vaccinated on time.
It is to be mentioned here that seven healthcare workers- four doctors, a dispenser, a lady health visitor (LHV) and a midwife were recently suspended, while explanation letters issued to seven hospital heads recently following lapses identified in the handling of anti-rabies vaccination cases that led to the deaths, on the directives of Chief Secretary Sindh.
“The purpose of this disciplinary action is, in fact, to find out the lapses in the system, despite the arrangements at the health facilities, so that these gaps can be covered. We are tracking each and every case of dog-bite mortality,” the chief secretary said in a media report.
