West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican described his six-wicket haul against Pakistan in the second Test as the most rewarding performance of his career after carrying the hosts’ bowling attack in Port of Spain.

Warrican returned figures of 6-112 as Pakistan were bowled out for 372 on day three, taking eight wickets for 106 runs after the visitors had resumed on 266-2 and looked poised to build a substantial first-innings lead.

With captain Roston Chase restricted to just seven overs because of an injured index finger, Warrican bowled 46 overs — 40% of West Indies’ total workload — to limit Pakistan’s lead to 43 runs.

“I think that’s probably the one I’ll cherish the most because the team was down and the skipper was struggling with his finger, and I had to take up the mantle,” Warrican told reporters.

“In terms of workload and to get rewarded for bowling so many overs, it felt extremely special.”

The spell was the left-armer’s third five-wicket haul in Test cricket and his first on home soil.

“I always wanted a five-for at home,” Warrican said. “That’s something that I will cherish.”

Pakistan, however, regained control before stumps as off-spinner Sajid Khan claimed four wickets to leave West Indies struggling at 103-6 in their second innings, a lead of just 60 runs.

“As a team we’ve got to get close to 150-175 to be comfortable and have a game,” Warrican said. “We’ve got to have a plan on how we’re going to get it and execute it when we get to bat tomorrow.”
