PESHAWAR:

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake originating in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region was felt across parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) on Tuesday morning, causing panic among residents in several districts.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake struck at 9:03am with a depth of 191 kilometres. The epicentre was located in the Hindu Kush mountain range of Afghanistan at latitude 36.53°N and longitude 70.48°E.

Tremors were felt in Swat, Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Shangla, Buner, Malakand and adjoining areas. Residents rushed out of their homes and workplaces as the shaking was felt.

Despite the widespread tremors, no immediate reports of casualties or damage were received from the affected districts.

PMD said the earthquake’s deep focal depth likely helped reduce its impact on the ground, although the tremors were clearly felt across much of the Malakand Division and neighbouring regions.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have urged citizens to remain alert while avoiding panic.
