Pakistan has recorded a significant improvement in the International Telecommunication Union’s ICT Development Index 2026, jumping 27 places with a 20% increase in its score, according to an official statement issued on Friday.

According to the latest data, Pakistan’s ICT Development Index score increased from 56.4 in 2025 to 67.7 in 2026, showing a 20% relative improvement. The country also recorded a 22.8-point improvement in the connectivity pillar, achieved a Meaningful Connectivity score of 79, and improved its derived position by 27 places.

The ICT Development Index is calculated under a revised methodology established in 2023. The index emphasises meaningful connectivity and is based on two key areas: Universal Connectivity, which measures the availability of networks and infrastructure, and Meaningful Connectivity, which assesses reliability, affordability and inclusiveness of digital connections, including device ownership and data traffic.

Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said that Pakistan’s improvement in the index reflects Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s vision for a digitally enabled Pakistan and the government’s continued priority to the IT and telecom sectors.

She said that improved ICT indicators are directly linked with education, employment, freelancing, entrepreneurship, business activity and digital public services, particularly for young people and the digital workforce.

The minister said the government remains committed to expanding reliable and affordable connectivity, improving service quality, promoting digital inclusion and facilitating investment in the IT and telecom sectors.

She further said that Pakistan’s progress in the index carries positive significance for the digital ecosystem, investors, technology companies and development partners, as the country continues to strengthen its digital foundations and move towards a more inclusive digital economy.

Pakistan’s progress in the ITU ICT Development Index 2026 represents an important step towards wider digital access, improved national readiness and technology-led economic growth.
