LAHORE
Skywatchers in Lahore had the opportunity to witness the rare astronomical phenomenon known as a Blue Moon on Sunday night, as the second full moon of May 2026 rises over the city.
According to astronomers, a Blue Moon occurs when two full moons appear within the same calendar month, a relatively uncommon event that typically takes place once every two to three years. The first full moon of May occurred on May 1, while the second is taking place on May 31.
Astronomical data indicate that the Moon will rose over Lahore at approximately 7:22 pm local time and remained visible throughout the night.
Experts noted that the most striking views took place between 7:30 pm and 10pm, when the Moon will appeared low on the eastern horizon. Weather permitting, residents observed the phenomenon for the entire night.
Professor Dr Syed Aamir Mahmood, Chairman of the Space Science Department at Punjab University, said that the term Blue Moon does not refer to the Moon’s colour. Instead, it is an astronomical term used to describe the second full moon occurring within a single calendar month.
He explained that this year’s Blue Moon also coincides with a “Micromoon”, meaning the Moon is positioned relatively farther from Earth in its orbit. As a result, it may appear slightly smaller and dimmer than a typical full moon.
According to astronomical calculations, the Moon reached its exact full phase at around 1:45 pm Pakistan Standard Time on Sunday. However, it was below Lahore’s horizon at that time, making the evening and nighttime hours the best opportunity for public observation.
Astronomers advised residents to view the Blue Moon from open areas, parks and elevated locations with a clear view of the eastern sky and minimal light pollution to enjoy the spectacle under optimal conditions.
